Top GTK Themes to look out for in 2015

In the last article I listed up the top 5 icon themes for Linux. I also discussed the terminal commands and how to enable them on your Linux desktop.

Now, I am telling you the most beautiful GTK themes for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and 14.10 Utopic Unicorn. Well these are also available for other Linux distributions. You can find these beautiful icon themes on Noobslab and Gnome-look for you favorite distro.

Customize the look and feel of your Ubuntu OS with these GTK themes:

 Ambiance and Radiance Colors Suite

Ambiance-ColorAmbiance and Radiance color suite pack is an enhanced version of the default Ambiance and Radiance theme in Ubuntu. This Ambiance and Radiance color theme pack is available in 12 different awesome colors.

Ambiance and radiance Colors Suite pack supports almost all gtk2/gtk3 desktops which includes Unity, Gnome Classic, Gnome 2 (Mate), XFCE ,LXDE & Openbox desktop. Currently it is not available for Gnome shell. Linux distros Ubuntu 14.10 LTS and 14.10 Utopic Unicorn are fully supported with Ambiance and radiance color suite pack theme. It also supports all popular Linux distros with GTK 3.10 to 3.12.

With this theme installed, you will find unified menu bar gradient for GTK3 apps and beautiful dark side bar for Nautilus file/Nemo. Ambiance is the Dark theme that makes the menu, panel etc. dark whereas Radiance is the lighter flavor with light color background.

Install this beautiful theme via PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ravefinity-project/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ambiance-colors radiance-colors

Dorian Theme

DorianDorian is a graceful dark GTK3 theme. It appears clean on the desktop and easy to work with. It’s package includes themes for Gtk2 & Gtk3, Metacity/Mutter/Unity,Firefox, Gnome-Shell , Xfce4-Notify, Xfwm4, Openbox and Ubuntu-Software-Center. It is different from other themes, with some own unique features. You will really like the buttons and widgets diagonal pattern that distinguish them in normal and active states.

Dorian theme 3.12 version is available for Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 14.10 users. Dorian theme developer has also made available 3.14 version for the upcoming Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid Vervet. Ubuntu 15.04 users can install it via a Zip file.

Open terminal and type this command to install:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/themes
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install dorian-theme-3.12

Paper Theme

PaperPaper is a beautiful, flat and modern theme for Gnome users. It is based on Google material design framework which gives a modern look to your desktop. It is still in development phase. So you have to face some problems like missing icons, blank square shapes and frequent updates. GTK3 and Gnome desktop users will get the best experience of this paper theme. It is quite unstable on old desktops like GTK2.

Paper theme uses flat design and minimal use of shadow for depth. This theme is basically for latest Gnome desktops, as it uses different color for header bars/client side decoration apps. This is incomplete beta theme but still looks very beautiful and elegant.

Ubuntu users can add this PPA for daily updates and install it from there:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:snwh/pulp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install paper-gtk-theme

Orchis Theme

OrchisOrchis is a GTK3 theme with semi flat style and traditional design patterns. Orchis GTK theme is a Moka project theme, well known for designing beautiful themes and icons for Linux distros. GTK2 desktop users need to install Murrine engine, if they want to experience Orchis theme.

Download and intall Orchis GTK theme with this terminal command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:moka/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install orchis-gtk-theme

Delorian Dark

Delorean DarkDelorian is a gray scale dark theme. This theme uses strong contrasts and rich textures. Delorian Dark-3.12 theme has two versions Light and Dark. This dark theme is inspired  from its previous version Delorian Dark-3.8 and Adwaita theme. Theme package includes themes for GTK2 and GTK3, Metacity/Unity, and Xfwm4. It also has customized theme for Thunderbird and Ubuntu Software center.

Delorian is a beaultiful, clean and simple dark theme. It’s some characteristics like round menu buttons make this theme unique.

You can install Delorian Dark theme via PPA in Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 14.10:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/themes
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install delorean-dark-3.12


You can enable these themes with any tool. Gnome tweak tool, Ubuntu tweak tool and Unity tweak tool provides many customization options and help you to enable these themes easily.

        Looks really good except the scollbars (flat and just as bad as the rest) otherwise a really fine theme.
