Things to do after installing Fedora 21- (Post Installation Guide)

Fedora 21 is released recently with lots of changes and updated apps. A new Fedora Installation is not perfectly configured for daily use. Here is a guide for things to do after installing Fedora 21 to get a more polished desktop.

First thing to do


1)>>Update your system

To update your system you can use the “Software” application. Click on Update tab and install the latest updates. Or you can update using terminal. To open up he terminal press windows key and then type Terminal. Press Enter and copy paste the following command in terminal:

sudo yum update

2)>>Enable RPM fusion repository

By enabling RPM Fusion Repositories we can install applications like Vlc, media-codecs, etc which are not available in Fedora official repositories due to some sort of license issues. Copy and paste the following command in Terminal to enable RPM fusion:

su -c 'yum localinstall --nogpgcheck http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm'

 Plugins

3)>>Install necessary plugins for media playback:

sudo yum install gstreamer1-plugins-good gstreamer1-plugins-good-extras gstreamer1-plugins-ugly gstreamer1-plugins-base gstreamer1-plugsins-base-tools gstreamer1-plugins-bad-freeworld gstreamer1-plugins-bad-free gstreamer1-plugins-bad-free-extra gstreamer1-libav

4)>>Install unrar and 7-zip plugins:

yum install unrar p7zip p7zip-plugins

5)>>Install Adobe Flash Player plugin:

First add adobe repository by entering the following command:

sudo rpm -ivh http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/adobe-release/adobe-release-i386-1.0-1.noarch.rpm

Import Keys:

sudo rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-adobe-linux

Intsall flash plugin:

sudo yum install flash-plugin

 6)>>Install OpenJDK Java Plugins for Web:

sudo yum install icedtea-web java-openjdk

 Media

7)>>Install VLC media player:

sudo yum install vlc

 8)>>Install Audacious music player:

sudo yum install audacious

 9)>>Install Audacity music editor:

sudo yum install audacity

10)>>Install Gnome Music Player:

sudo yum install gnome-music

 Browser

11)>> Install Latest Google Chrome Browser in Fedora:

Type the following command in Terminal:

sudo gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/google-chrome.repo

Type the following text in Text editor opened after entering the above command:

[google-chrome]
name=google-chrome
baseurl=http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/rpm/stable/$basearch
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub

To install google chrome type:

sudo yum install google-chrome-stable

12)>>Install Opera in Fedora 21:

Go to the following link:

http://www.opera.com/download/guide/?os=linux

Fedora under Select Distribution and select Default Package under Choose Package Format.

Download the rpm file and double click to install. You can also install using terminal type:

rpm -ivh <file name>

13)>>Install Lightweight Midori Browser:

sudo yum install midori

Graphic

14)>>Gimp:

sudo yum install gimp

15)>>Inkscape

sudo yum install inkscape

16)>>Blender:

sudo yum install blender

Social

17)>>Gwibber:

sudo yum install gwibber

18)>>Pidgin:

sudo yum install pidgin

Torrent and Download manager

19)>>Install qbittorrent:

sudo yum install qbittorrent

20)>>Install Deluge torrent client:

sudo yum install deluge

21)>>For download managers use DownloadThemAll

A firefox extension for managing and accelerating Downloads. Search in firefox Addons.


 Miscellaneous

22)>>Install Popcorn Time on Fedora 21

Create repository of Dropbox:

sudo gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/dropbox.repo

Paste the following lines in text editor:

[Dropbox]
name=Dropbox Repository
baseurl=http://linux.dropbox.com/fedora/20/
gpgkey=http://linux.dropbox.com/fedora/rpm-public-key.asc

Type the following to install Dropbox:

sudo yum install nautilus-dropbox

24)>>Install Steam in Fedora 21

Create repository:

sudo gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/steam.repo

Paste the following lines in gedit:

[steam]
name=Steam RPM packages (and dependencies) for Fedora
baseurl=http://spot.fedorapeople.org/steam/fedora-$releasever/
enabled=1
skip_if_unavailable=1
gpgcheck=0

Install Steam:

sudo yum install steam
